World number 178 Ernesto Escobedo is yet to drop a set from the qualifiers through to the second round after an excellent display against in-form youngster Holger Rune on Friday. The 25-year-old is better than his current ranking with a career-high of 67th achieved back in 2017 and he has shown glimmers of returning to the top 100 sooner rather than later with a run to the quarter-finals at the Los Cabos Open back in July. World number 17 Cristian Garin won his fifth career title on clay earlier this season but he has struggled away from his favoured surface. A run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon is still impressive fare for the Chilean but his draw there was favourable and he lost comfortably to Novak Djokovic in the end.
THE PREDICTION
This looks like a potential upset on Sunday with the 13th seed Cristian Garin coming in a little cold and low on form against a Californian underdog likely to garner full support by a partisan crowd. “Neto” Escobedo winning at least a set here would not be a huge surprise given his performances so far at Indian Wells and the fact that Garin, also 25, has not played a tour-level match since the first of September, where he lost to then world number 115 Henri Laaksonen in four sets. Escobedo to take a set is the call here; to win the match is a tempting one-off.
