World number Coco Gauff will play her first Singles match since a second round defeat to Sloane Stephens at the Us Open last month but the 17-year-old has already embarked on a blockbuster Women’s Doubles campaign alongside US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez. Gauff won her second career WTA title earlier this year at the Emilia-Romagna Open on clay, on which she also set her new Grand Slam record by reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. World number 59 Carolina Garcia also made the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros back in 2017 at the height of her powers and she reached a career-high fourth in the WTA world rankings a year later. The 27-year-old has seven WTA title to her name so far.
THE PREDICTION
17-year-old Coco Gauff, alongside Leylah Fernandez, conceded just two games in the first round of the Women’s Doubles on Thursday and that should see her match-fit and ready to take on Caroline Garcia for the first time. Garcia is something of an enigma at this stage of her career with plenty of time left to rediscover her best form at 27 years old. She conceded the first set to a rare singles appearance from Kirsten Flipkens before winning in three in the first round but at that level she is unlikely to get as many chances against Gauff. At this stage, in these conditions and in front of a partisan crowd, Gauff to win in straight sets looks on.
