THE LOWDOWN
World number 83 Brandon Nakashima came through a first round encounter with Federico Coria comfortably enough in straight sets to create an All-American second round clash. The 20-year-old has made two finals on hardcourts already this season, losing to Cam Norrie at the Los Cabos Open and John Isner at the Atlanta Open a week later, with his star rising quickly alongside fellow youngster Jenson Brooksby. World number 39 Taylor Fritz just scrapes into the seeds here at 31st at a tournament he has enjoyed plenty of success at in recent years. Fritz, now 23 years old, famously beat Marin Cilic at this stage in 2017 and he made the round of 16 a year later via strong wins over Reilly Opelka, Andrey Rublev and Fernando Verdasco. Fritz also lost to Isner and Norrie at Los Cabos and Atlanta, both in the semi-finals before Nakashima.
THE PREDICTION
Fritz beat Nakashima in four sets in the first round of Wimbledon back in July in an exciting first encounter but this time around it should come even closer. The 23-year-old’s defeat to Jenson Brooksby at the US Open was something of a sign to suggest that Brooksby and Nakashima could one day soon usurp the likes of Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Reilly Opelka as the vanguard of US Men’s tennis but until that day these meetings will always be exciting, with a little extra motivation behind them. Fritz has struggled with fitness in recent months but when he finds his forehand he is still a future top 20 candidate, with a current career-high of 24th achieved last season. This should be electric in front of the Indian Wells crowd but take in-form Nakashima to win at least a set as the man likelier to garner most of the support.
