World number 102 Astra Sharma played well to oust Donna Vekic in the first round with a three-set victory. The 26-year-old won her first WTA title earlier this season with a stunning victory over Ons Jabeur at the Charleston 250 but she has struggled to match that level since. Similarly, world number 30 Daria Kasatkina started the season off like a house on fire to win the Philipp Island Trophy in Melbourne and the WTA 500 event in St. Petersburg a month later in March. She has struggled in patches to maintain that level since then but two more finals reached is excellent fare for the former world number 10 on her return to the top.
THE PREDICTION
Astra Sharma’s incredible campaign in Charleston earlier this season suggests there is more to come from the 26-year-old Aussie but her recent form is lacking. Beating Donna Vekic could be a sign of a corner being turned but she should find tackling Daria Kasatkina for the first time too much of a challenge on this occasion. 24-year-old Kasatkina has reached four finals this season and she certainly has the ability to go deep here in Indian Wells as a former finalist from 2018. Take the Russian to win in straight sets.
