THE LOWDOWN
Former world number one Angelique Kerber won the Bad Homburg Open back in June, against Katerina Siniakova, for a first title in three years and her 13th overall. The 33-year-old had looked like her career was fading but she was joyfully rejuvenated at Wimbledon before defeat to the eventual champion Ash Barty in the semi-finals. Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam champion after claiming the 2016 Australian Open and US Open and then Wimbledon two years later. 25-year-old Katerina Siniakova has also won three Grand Slam titles but in Women’s Doubles alongside long-standing partner Barbora Krejcikova. The current world number 53 won two WTA titles back in 2017 and she set her career-high ranking a year later at 31st.
THE PREDICTION
Kerber leads a healthy 5-1 head-to-head record with Siniakova after adding two more wins to the total this season at the Grampians Trophy in Melbourne and more recently in the final of the Bad Homburg Open. That title was the spark that lit the German’s flame once again and two semi-finals since at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open is strong form that puts her in the title contender conversation here at Indian Wells. Siniakova’s sole win over Kerber came on her favoured clay at the Italian Open last season but this looks a tough draw for her. Take Kerber to win outright here and probably in two.
