THE LOWDOWN
World number 20 Anett Kontaveit is close to her career-high ranking of 14th after an already excellent season turned to gold at the Ostrava Open last month. The Estonian won her first title for four years just before the US Open at Tennis In The Land and then bettered that considerably with a first WTA 500 win in Ostrava just two weeks ago. She is still technically carrying a win streak from that tournament after pulling out of the second round of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic last week. 27-year-old Martina Trevisan is up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 66th after some success on the Challenger and ITF circuit but the Italian did make the quarter-finals of the Serbia Open earlier this year.
THE PREDICTION
Kontaveit won their only previous meeting in the first round of the Gstaad Open in 2017 on clay and the Estonian’s recent form suggests a similar story will play out here. Not including her departure from Chicago with an injury scare last week, the 25-year-old is on a six-match winning streak that includes the likes of Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic, Petra Kvitova and Maria Sakkari whom she beat in the Ostrava Open final. That kind of form makes her look a dark horse for the title in California so take her to get started with a straight sets win.
