World number five Andrey Rublev is teaming up with fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev this week in what should be a vastly enjoyable doubles partnership. The 23-year-old clearly enjoyed his time at the Laver Cup last month where he won his singles match against Diego Schwartzman and both doubles matches alongside Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, a loss to Cam Norrie in the San Diego semi-finals is the kind of slip-up we have seen a few times this season that simply would not happen this time last year. World number 116 Carlos Taberner defeated fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar in the first round on Thursday in relative comfort to reach the second round of Indian Wells on his debut.
THE PREDICTION
Fourth seed Andrey Rublev has a solid chance at reaching a second Masters final this season if he can stay consistent, with his natural predators seeded in other quarters of the draw. The 23-year-old lost to Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open back in August on his first Masters final but he has on occasion bested the top players and he is a danger to anyone on his day. He should face little pushback in this first meeting with Carlos Taberner, with the Spaniard drawing a short straw here and likely to lose in straight sets.
