THE LOWDOWN
World number 21 Bianca Andreescu dropped significantly down the WTA world rankings after losing her staggered US Open points from her Grand Slam winning campaign in 2019. If the 21-year-old can stay fit for an extended period of time she will be back in the top 10 in no time at all and she has a superb chance at defending her Indian Wells title from 2019 with the likes of Ash Barty, Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka all missing from the draw. Andreescu’s win here as a debutant in 2019 was a fabulous breakthrough and she also won the Canadian Open later that year to show for three incredible WTA titles so far composing of one Grand Slam and two Masters. World number 51 Alison Riske came close to making it three career titles recently but she lost in the Slovenian Open final to Jasmine Paolini. The 31-year-old will have been disappointed but likely more focused on her so far successful but long road to recovery from injury, something she can identify with Andreescu.
THE PREDICTION
Bianca Andreescu reached the final of the Miami Open earlier this season before an injury in the final forced her to concede to world number one Ash Barty. That has been the last two years of her young career in a nutshell, with the potential there to win any tournament she enters if her body holds up long enough to allow her. This is a tough opening draw for the Canadian against a seasoned professional in Alison Riske, who is also enjoying a spell of fitness after a long injury lay-off. Riske is capable of forcing a decider here but realistically Andreescu should be able to blast through to the third round in straight sets. Leave all of her matches out of accumulators as a rule.
