World number 202 Aleksandar Vukic put in an excellent display to beat Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar in straight sets on Friday. The 25-year-old pushed Denis Shapovalov close at Queen’s back in June but this win on his Indian Wells debut is the best of his season so far. World number 27 Alex de Minaur has endured an odd season full of peaks and troughs but he has claimed titles four and five this year at the Antalya Open and Eastbourne International. The 22-year-old reached a career-high 15th back in June after Eastbourne but he has lost seven of his last eight matches since winning there.
THE PREDICTION
Alex de Minaur has just one win under his belt since beating Lorenzo Sonego in the Eastbourne International final back in June, with a win in the first round over Filip Krajinovic at the Cincinnati Open. The younger of this all-Aussie second round clash should be blasting through this first meeting on paper but his poor form, and Aleksandar Vukic’s performances this week including qualifiers, suggests an upset could be on the cards. De Minaur is one strong performance away from rediscovering his level but taking Vukic to win at least a set here looks a shrewd option here.
