THE PREDICTION

This should be a fantastic spectacle under the lights of Philippe-Chatrier as two darlings of Roland-Garros go head to head. 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal came through a well-contested three sets with Alexei Popyrin on Tuesday for a useful settler in Paris whilst 35-year-old Gasquet was at his silky best against young Frenchman Hugo Gaston to also come through in three. What should be a really high-quality feast for the eyes on court really only has one potential outcome, though, as Gasquet’s trademark backhand has always been muted against Nadal’s lefty forehand to the tune of an incredible 16-0 head-to-head record in favour of the Spaniard. You would be hard pushed to find a more definitive record than that on tour so taking Nadal to win in his customary three-set blitz here looks a solid option indeed. Gasquet has taken just four sets from Nadal, his last coming in 2008.
