World number 12 Denis Shapovalov has been enjoying is status as the third seed here in Dubai and is yet to drop a set after two impressive performances against Jan-Lennard Struff and Hubert Hurkacz. The 21-year-old should have more than just the one ATP title to his name by now such is his quality but, equally, he is still incredibly young and those two traits often see him crash out in the latter stages. He faces world number 53 Jeremy Chardy who is playing some of the best tennis of his career this season. The 34-year-old has come through three three-set slogs in Dubai to reach the quarter-finals via Albert Ramos-Vinolas, ninth seed Alex de Minaur and eighth seed Karen Khachanov and he has made the quarter-finals of four tournaments out of six played in 2021. The Frenchman is a sight to behold right now and a real dark horse for this tournament. In normal service Denis Shapovalov should be extending his head-to-head record from 2-0 to 3-0 over Chardy but take the veteran to beat the youngster here outright and probably from behind.
