THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Hubert Hurkacz won the last Masters event played on a hard court with an incredible campaign at the Miami Open back in April. Since then the Pole has stuttered and stunned in equal measure, turning a post-Miami losing streak into a sudden run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon via victories over Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev amongst others. The 24-year-old had another hiccup at the Olympics but he is through to the round of 16 in Toronto without taking to court after Kei Nishikori pulled out of their match. Whether or not that will help his cause here remains to be seen but a first meeting with world number 42 Nikoloz Basilashvili should be an engrossing spectacle after the Georgian conceded just two games to the 12th seed Alex de Minaur. 29-year-old Basilashvili has also blown hot and cold this year but two ATP titles won in Qatar and Munich is a great haul so far. This is probably best left be considering Hurkacz has not played yet this week but taking Basilashvili to win at least a set here seems apt given his excellent campaign so far.
