31-year-old John Millman is the eight seed here in Munich and through to the quarter-finals of a tournament for the first time since last season’s Sofia Open in November. The world number 40 beat fellow Aussie Alexei Popyrin in three draining sets before Guido Pella was forced to retire from their round of 16 encounter in the second set and so he should be able to recover any spent energy by Friday. However, Millman faces 22-year-old Casper Ruud in fierce form and the Norwegian could be a dark horse for the title here as the second seed. World number 24 Ruud made it through to the semis of the Monte-Carlo Masters two weeks ago with some excellent performances before coming unstuck against Andrey Rublev but he should have more than enough for this test. Take the clay specialist to win this in straight-sets despite a dogged resolve from Millman.
