- Dusan Lajovic came into the Australian open with very little form to speak of but has justified his seeding at 23rd by reaching the round of 16 after a four-set fightback over Pedro Martinez.
- 30-year-old Lajovic has met Alexander Zverev twice before, at Roland-Garros in 2018 and 2019, where they battled it out over five sets to see the Serb come off the worse in both.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- 23-year-old Alexander Zverev beat Adrian Mannarino for the fourth time in just under half a year with a composed straight-sets victory to reach the round of 16 here.
- The world number seven is growing well into this tournament in much the same way he did last season, falling to defeat at the hands of eventual runner-up Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals.
THE PREDICTION
Sixth-seed Alexander Zverev has an excellent opportunity to reach the quarter-finals here against a man he has beaten twice before at Grand Slams. On clay at Roland-Garros 2018 and 1029, Zverev was able to best Dusan Lajovic over five sets, twice, on the Serb’s favoured surface. Here at the Australian Open the fast hard courts favour the German’s sometimes unstoppable service game and he is likely to be able to blast Lajovic off the court. 23rd-seed Lajovic has played three testing matches so far to the tune of 13 sets and that could be a difference-maker too as the match wears on against Zverev, who has played 10 sets so far. The German has got better and better through his first three matches and while there is scope for a set each here the likelier outcome looks to be a straight-sets victory for the world number seven.
