23-year-old Jaume Munar is yet to drop a set at the Argentina Open after two strong wins over Facundo Diaz Acosta and, impressively, the eighth seed Frances Tiafoe on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals here. His reward is a shot at the first seed Diego Schwartzman, with the world number nine not quite firing on all cylinders right now. Schwartzman was taken out of last week’s Cordoba Open at this stage by a Spaniard who had never beaten him before in Albert Ramos-Vinolas and finds himself in a similar circumstance as Munar is on the wrong end of a 2-0 head-to-head record with the Argentine. Nevertheless, Schwartzman has looked strong enough to beat the world 106 this week in Buenos Aires and last week’s performance could have been a slight hangover from his disappointment at the Australian Open. Munar took a set off Schwartzman in their first meeting at the 2018 US Open but last year’s straight-sets defeat at the Cordoba Open looks to be the benchmark here. Schwartzman to win is the easy option here, in straight sets seems the likeliest method if slightly risky with the 28-year-old’s form right now.
