THE PREDICTION
This looks like a fascinating encounter between 21-year-old Kei Nishikori on his comeback trail and Borna Coric in their first meeting since 2015 when the Croat was still a teenager. That day Coric, a mercurial youngster, took a set off the Japanese star in defeat at the Tokyo Open but six years on there is no sense using that match as a reference point here. Nishikori has performed to his level for possibly the first time in over a year this week in Rotterdam as he took out the seventh seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets and followed that with an impressive win over Alex de Minaur on Wednesday. The world number 45 is targeting a return to the top 10 this season after declaring himself fit and with so few seeds left in the draw here he has a real chance at making an unlikely tilt for the title. World number 26 Coric beat Daniil Medvedev’s vanquisher Dusan Lajovic in straight sets on Thursday and will be targeting a final himself too. A result looks incredibly tough to side with considering Nishikori’s sudden form but the Japanese can ride the momentum with confidence as a seasoned hard-court specialist to come through in three sets. 10 of Nishikori’s 12 ATP titles have come on hard courts, with half of those indoors.
