Taylor Towsend last competed in Miami last month, losing in the second-round after a three set loss against Jasmine Paolini. The American found form earlier this year as she advanced all the way to the final of the ATX Open, losing to Peyton Stearns. Townsend followed that up by qualifying for Indian Wells and making it through to the second-round. Nevertheless, she is still ranked 90 in the world.
Katie Boulter is her opponent in the first-round. The former British number one enjoyed a positive showing in Rouen last week, as she reached the quarter-finals. She defeated Maria Timofeeva easily and then pulled off a fine victory as she defeated Jaqueline Cristian in three sets. However, Boulter will have been disappointed by her straight sets loss to Ukrainian qualifier Veronika Podrez in the last eight.
Boulter has already picked up a title this season at the Ostrava Open, and she is performing at a higher level than last season. She also leads the head-to-head 3-0 against Townsend.
