Taylor Townsend produced a strong display to beat Lulu Sun in straight sets and advance to the next round of the Miami Open. The American was not broken on serve and won 86% of her first serve points as she claimed a 7-6 (5) 6-3 win. She reached the final of the ATX Open last month and currently has eight wins from her last 10 matches.
She now faces Jasmine Paolini, who received a bye in the first-round. The Italian has picked up a few more wins in comparison to the start of the season, but she was still on the end of an ultimately disappointing round-of-16 loss to Talia Gibson at Indian Wells. She ended 2025 strongly, but Paolini has not been close to that level in the opening months of this year.
If Townsend continues to serve well and play aggressively, she could cause an upset against Paolini, who has looked low on confidence.
