Talia Gibson continued her brilliant run as she defeated Clara Tauson in the third-round of Indian Wells. The Australian had beaten world number 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova in the previous stage of the competition, and she maintained her level to win in three sets here. Tauson served extremely well, with 29 aces, but the rest of her game faltered as Gibson won 7-6 (2) 4-6 6-4.
Her next opponent is Jasmine Paolini. She needed three sets to beat Ajla Tomljanovic. Paolini took the first set after a slight stumble, but was poor in the second as she was broken on a total of three occasions, with the Australian levelling the match up. Paolini increased her level to win 7-5 5-7 6-1. It has not been a strong start to the season from the Italian, who suffered early exits in Melbourne, Doha and Dubai.
Gibson will enter the top 100 of the world rankings after this event, and she’s performing at her highest ever level. Paolini is the clear favourite, but she has not been close to her best in 2026 and could be vulnerable against the Australian.
