Failure to win here against Wolfsburg could see Stuttgart lose their place in the top four later on Sunday.

Stuttgart preview: Dropped points

Stuttgart can only have themselves to blame as they dropped an important two points last weekend away to bottom of the table Heidenheim. At first it looked like Sebastian Hoeness’ side would race to three points after taking the lead early on. But that was as good as it got with Stuttgart unable to counter the Heidenheim rally.

Twice Hoeness’ men had to come from behind to salvage a 3-3 draw and since then Stuttgart have tasted defeat against Celtic this past Thursday night, although it didn’t stop them from qualifying for the next round of the Europa League.

Wolfsburg preview: Leipzig draw a false dawn

Wolfsburg failed to capitalise on earning a surprise draw against RB Leipzig on the road, as they fell to their 13th league defeat of the season in their following game, losing 2-3 at home to Augsburg as defensive fragilities ended up costing them dearly. They’ve now given up a whopping 49 Bundesliga goals this season, only Heidenheim have conceded more.

Worst of all is the manner of Wolfsburg’s loss last weekend. They led twice and were even ahead going into the final few minutes but an 87th minute equaliser, followed by a goal deep into second half stoppage time left them with nothing.

Stuttgart team news: Only one miss

Jovanovic represents the only absentee for Stuttgart, with Hoeness needing to decide whether to play Demirovic up top, or role with Undav in that position ahead of Leweling, Fuhrich and El Khannouss.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Nubel; Assignon, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Karazor, Stiller; Leweling, Undav, El Khannouss; Demirovic

Unavailable: Jovanovic (Injured)

Questionable:

Wolfsburg team news: Injury list still large

Wolfsburg will need to make a late call regarding the likes of Arnold and Lindstrom but players such as Maehle, Fischer and Wimmer are among those who won’t feature due to injury.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Grabara; Kumbedi, Vavro, Jenz, Belocian; Eriksen, Gerhardt; Daghim, Majer, Shiogai; Amoura

Unavailable: Cleiton (Injured), Dardai (Injured), Fischer (Injured), Maehle (Injured), Paredes (Injured), Rogerio (Injured), Seelt (Injured), Wimmer (Injured)

Questionable: Arnold (Injured), Lindstrom (Illness), Svanberg (Injured), Wind (Injured)

Stuttgart vs Wolfsburg prediction

From Stuttgart’s perspective, this game is a must win. Failure to do so could see them knocked out of the top four depending on RB Leipzig’s result later in the day. After a subpar performance in midweek, likely due to them already having one foot in the next round of the Europa League and with one eye on this game, we should see a much better version of Stuttgart.

Wolfsburg can’t seem to keep out the goals at present and constant defeats are plaguing this side. Although they showed at Leipzig that this side are capable of going away to a strong team and getting something, a laser-focused Stuttgart are expected to put them away in this one.
