Key stats

  • The only previous meetings between these teams in UEFA competition were in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup fourth round when a 0-0 draw in Stuttgart in the first leg was followed by a 2-1 home win for Celta in the second leg which put the Spanish team through to the quarter-finals.
  • Stuttgart won their only previous two UEFA Europa League group/league matches against a Spanish team – 1-0 at home and 3-0 away vs Getafe in the 2010/11 group stage.
  • Stuttgart are without a win in their last six home matches in the UEFA Europa League proper (D3 L3).
  • Stuttgart have won only three of their last 14 UEFA competition matches (D4 L7).
  • Celta have won only one of their previous five UEFA matches against German teams (D2 L2). That was their 2-1 home victory against Stuttgart in the second leg of their 2000/01 UEFA Cup fourth round tie.
  • Celta have lost only two of their last ten UEFA matches (W5 D3).
  • Celta are unbeaten in their last five UEFA matches away from home (W3 D2).

Stuttgart vs Celta Vigo prediction

Sebastian Hoeness’ Stuttgart have been up and down in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, and they finished firmly in the middle-of-the-table last year before winning the DFB-Pokal. They come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat of St Pauli at the VfB Stadion in the Bundesliga at the weekend.

They now face a Celta Vigo side that have had a frankly bizarre start to La Liga with the Galicians beginning with a defeat to Getafe on the opening day of the season and then going on to share five successive 1-1 draws. Claudio Giraldez’ side most recently shared that scoreline with Rayo Vallecano in the capital city of Madrid the other day.

Celta are an entertaining side and the amount of games in which both teams score involving them is high, and so backing that would appear a good bet for this one.
