Stuttgart preview: Woltemade on his way

The headlines have been dominated Stuttgart over the past couple of days following the news that a bid has been accepted from Newcastle for 23-year-old attacker Nick Woltemade, one of the hottest young prospects in German football. Woltemade started last weekend in Stuttgart’s 2-1 defeat away at Union Berlin but now appears to be on his way to the Premier League.

That wasn’t the only drama involving Stuttgart this week, as they contested a thrilling 4-4 draw with 2. Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig in the DFP-Pokal, eventually winning on penalties. Woltemade came off the bench to score a last-minute equaliser in normal time, likely his final goal for the club.

Borussia Monchengladbach preview: Lack of potency

Despite boasting 62% possession and registering a whopping 17 shots on goal with four on target, Borussia Monchengladbach could not find a way to break down newly promoted Hamburg and had to settle for a goalless draw in their first league game of the season, a frustrating start for Gerardo Seoane.

Gladbach will need to find a way to improve their production on the attacking front if they are to make a meaningful impact over the course of the season. This serves as a tough assignment though in Stuttgart.

Stuttgart team news: Demirovic to slot in

With the impending sale of Woltemade, expect Ermedin Demirovic to start up top, with Deniz Undav behind him in the number ten role. Diehl, Silas and Stergiou miss out through injury although Chabot could make it.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Nubel; Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Karazor, Stiller; Leweling, Undav, Tomas; Demirovic

Unavailable: Diehl (Injured), Silas (Injured), Stergiou (Injured)

Questionable: Chabot (Injured), Jaquez (Injured)

Borussia Monchengladbach team news: Kleindienst not ready

Borussia Monchengladbach will again be without Tim Kleindienst, whose knee injury keeps him out once more. The visitors should match Stuttgart’s 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tabakovic up front in Kleindienst’s absence.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Nicolas; Scally, Elvedi, Diks, Ullrich; Reitz, Neuhaus; Honorat, Stoger, Hack; Tabakovic

Unavailable: Kleindienst (Injured), Mohya (Injured), Ngoumou (Injured), Swider (Illness)

Questionable:

Stuttgart vs Borussia Monchengladbach prediction

It remains to be seen how Stuttgart will adapt without Woltemade but in Demirovic, they do have a proven goalscorer who can pick up the slack. But both him and Deniz Undav will need to click well together if Stuttgart are to have a successful season, although they will surely add another striker to their squad prior to the transfer deadline.

Based on what we saw from Borussia Monchengladbach against Hamburg, it’s hard to see them generating the offensive play capable of doing major damage here, although Seoane’s team are well drilled defensively. Without Woltemade, Stuttgart could also struggle in attack and backing under 2.5 goals is well worth considering.

Stuttgart vs Borussia Monchengladbach tip: Under 2.5 goals
