Storm Hunter pulled off a fine recovery as she defeated Magdalena Frech in the first-round of Indian Wells. The Australian was 2-0 down in the third set but came back to win 3-6 7-5 6-3 after two hours and 50 minutes.
She now faces Belinda Bencic in the second-round. The Swiss received a bye in round one. Bencic began the season brilliantly as she won all of her five singles matches at the United Cup. However, her winning run would end in the second-round of the Australian Open as a result of a shock defeat to Nikola Bartunkova. She has competed in one event since, only making the third-round in Dubai after a defeat to Elina Svitolina, despite taking the first set.
They have played once before, in the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International five years ago, with Bencic winning in three sets. The Swiss reached the last eight here in 2025 and should get her campaign up and running this year with a victory.
