Sorana Cirstea continued her excellent farewell season as she produced a brilliant performance to beat Elise Mertens in straight sets. The Romanian was broken just once and created 11 break point opportunities as she won 6-3 6-2 after an hour and 18 minutes. Cirstea has already picked up a title at the Transylvania Open, and she has a 17-4 win-loss record in 2026.
She now faces world number four Coco Gauff. The American got through her second successive three set match in Miami, defeating compatriot Alycia Parks. Gauff trailed after the first set but won 11 of the final 12 games to win 3-6 6-0 6-1.
Gauff leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Cirstea aged just 15 in the second-round of the Australian Open six years ago. The American has been vulnerable at times so far, especially when it comes to her second serve, and Cirstea is likely to be very competitive here.
