Sonay Kartal impressed at Indian Wells as she reached the round-of-16 at the event for a second successive year. This included a dramatic encounter against Emma Navarro, as she saved a match point to win, and then a brilliant display to dump 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys out of the tournament. She would retire after losing the first set against Elena Rybakina. A potential first match up with fellow Brit Emma Raducanu lies in wait if Kartal wins her first-round match in Miami.
However, she will have her work cut out against Peyton Stearns. The American found form at the ATX Open as she won her second career title. Stearns was unable to continue the momentum at Indian Wells as she lost in straight sets to Shuai Zhang in straight sets.
Kartal is a fine competitor but did seem to run out of gas against Rybakina, and she will hope to be able to regroup and put in a strong display against Stearns.
