Sonay Kartal advanced to the next round of Indian Wells after defeating Lanlana Tararudee in straight sets. She was 4-2 down in the first set but reeled off four games in a row to take the lead. The Brit again had to come from a break down in the second to seal a 6-4 6-4 win after one hour and 47 minutes. Kartal struggled on serve, conceding 18 break points in total.
She faces Emma Navarro next. The American is struggling for results at this stage of the season. She competed at the ATX Open last week but fell to yet another defeat to Shuai Zhang in the second-round. Navarro has lost seven of her 11 matches so far in 2026.
Navarro leads the head-to-head 2-0 and defeated Kartal at the Billie Jean King Cup last year. The American has suffered a dip, but she still has the higher ceiling and should be able to take control if she settles into a rhythm.
