Sint-Truiden, also known as STVV, have started their Belgian Jupiler Pro League season with back-to-back score draws against Lommel and then Cercle Brugge. The Belgians have only ever played European football in the UEFA Intertoto Cup back in 2006, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League by finishing third last season.
They now face an Omonia Nicosia side that won a competitive Cypriot First Division title last season. Omonia were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the second qualifying round stage on penalties by Kairat before edging past Gibraltarian champions the Lincoln Red Imps in this competition, winning 2-1 on aggregate.
Omonia haven’t emulated what Pafos achieved by reaching the league phase of the UEFA Champions League last season but Sint-Truiden are appearing to struggle with after the departure of manager Wouter Vrancken to Heart of Midlothian this summer so a low-scoring encounter may well be the way to go for this first-leg.
