Sebastian Baez advanced to the next round of the Italian Open after getting past Jenson Brooksby in straight sets. Baez had already beaten the American in Auckland earlier this year, and he repeated the feat with a 6-3 7-6 (8) victory. He saved a set point in a lengthy second set tiebreak.
The Argentine now faces Alexander Bublik. The Kazakhstani has lost his last three matches in total. His clay court campaign began with a credible run to the last eight at the Monte-Carlo Masters, but he was then comprehensively beaten by Carlos Alcaraz. He followed that up with early losses in Munich and Madrid to Alex Molcan and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively.
Bublik leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight-forward win in Miami last year. He is still the favourite, but Baez will look to frustrate his opponent by extending the rallies and forcing his opponents into mistakes. He is worth a set here.
