Ruien Zhang will make her WTA Tour main draw debut at her home event in Beijing. She has featured in 20 matches on the ITF circuit this year, with 11 losses and nine victories. She last competed in Shenyang, losing in the second-round to Junhan Zhang. The 17-year-old is ranked 836 in the world.
Eva Lys got her Asian swing in Seoul off to the perfect start in the first-round as she comfortably beat Ashlyn Kreuger in straight sets. However, she would go no further after a 6-2 7-6 defeat to Clara Tauson. Lys has struggled with injury over the past month or so, but she can be a very difficult opponent on this surface, having reached the fourth-round of the Australian Open as a qualifier right at the start of the season.
Lys will be a clear favourite to win handsomely against such an inexperienced opponent in round one.
