THE PREDICTION
Clermont Auvergne were able to bounce back from a gut-wrenching 36-37 defeat to Bordeaux in late January with a positive 26-18 response at home to Lyon two weeks ago. They were shocked by newly-promoted Bayonne in the reverse of this fixture, losing 21-19 way back in September last year and will be eager to rectify that here. Bayonne broke a five-match losing streak in the Top 14 with a clutch 26-23 home victory over in-form Brive last weekend and they are normally well capable of scoring even in defeat. Therefore, a win for hosts Clermont in a match that goes over 40 points seems a reasonable outcome. Clermont could romp to a cricket score in this match but their visitors’ potency would make a handicap difficult here.
