Reilly Opelka overcame a slow start to beat Rinky Hijikata 1-6 6-3 7-5 7-6 and make the second-round of the French Open for the first time since 2021. His big serve played a part in his comeback, as he won 80% of first serve points and struck 22 aces in total, with 12 of those coming in the fourth set alone.
He now takes on Mariano Navone as he produced a fine performance to beat 28th seed Brandon Nakashima. The match was tied at one set apiece but the Argentine found another gear and won 7-6 4-6 6-1 6-2.
Navone is the far more capable player on clay than Opelka despite indifferent form heading into this tournament. He will have to be patient against the big server but we think Navone is excellent value to win this encounter in four sets and make it through to the third-round for the first time in his career.
