Despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open a week earlier, Rebecca Sramkova’s time in New York was brief as she lost to Ann Li in the first-round. Her run at the Grand Slams was poor, with three round one defeats, while only managing to make the second-round at the Australian Open. Sramkova’s best result of the season was a run to the semi-finals of the Nottingham Open in June.
Elena-Gabriela Ruse’s worrying run of form took another turn for the worse in New York as she lost 7-5 6-1 to Daria Kasatkina in the first-round. That extended her losing streak to seven matches. Her last victory came in the semi-finals of the Libema Open all the way back in June.
This is their first match on the WTA Tour, but they did face each other on the ITF circuit in Maribor two years ago, with Sramkova winning in straight sets. She will be expected to defeat the out-of-form Ruse in Beijing.
