The Latvian recovered to notch a 2-6 6-2 6-3 victory over the Romanian and will now tackle Qinwen Zheng for a fourth time.
The Chinese came up trumps with a 7-6 6-2 success over Cristina Bucsa and will be confident of reaching the round of 16 given she has won all three of her previous meetings with the former French Open champion.
