Priscilla Hon came through her first-round match as she battled past Viktorija Golubic in three sets. The Australian recovered from 4-1 down in the third set breaker and a dreadful start in the first set to win 1-6 6-4 7-6. Hon will be heading into her second-round match with confidence, having also got through the qualifying stages and reached the third-round of a Grand Slam for the first time last month at the US Open.
Jelena Ostapenko will be looking for a boost in Beijing after a period of poor form. An acrimonious exit to Taylor Townsend in round two of the US Open was followed up by a surprising first-round loss in Guadalajara to Marina Stakusic for the second year running despite heading into the event as the third seed. The Latvian has failed to get past the third-round of a tournament since the Italian Open in May.
Hon could be a potentially dangerous opponent for Ostapenko, but the 2017 French Open champion is still a clear favourite to get through.
