Portugal vs Austria prediction

After powering their way through the earlier knockout stage rounds through their excellent attacking play, the semi-finals saw Portugal excel defensively, holding their nerve in the most pressurised environment to defeat four-time champions Brazil in the semi-finals. The Portuguese backline held firm in a nail-biting contest which finished 0-0, before a thrilling penalty shootout saw them triumph 6-5.

Austria have been outstanding across the entire tournament and are still yet to concede a goal since the start of the knockout stage. Martin Scherb’s side have won all seven games played in the competition leading up to this final, topping their group before recording four knockout victories, all of which were achieved in 90 minutes. Whether it be their 4-0 demolition of England, their 1-0 triumph over Japan, or their quality second-half in a 2-0 semi-final win against Italy, Austria have proven simply imperious.

It's hard to see the Austrian train being stopped at this point, with just one more hurdle for them to overcome in the form of this battling Portuguese side. After overcoming Brazil, Portugal know that they are more than capable of another memorable display. But when taking into account how good Austria are in the second-half of games in particular and how they only seem to get better the longer these matches go on, backing them feels like the smart move.

Portugal vs Austria tip: Austria to win
