Peyton Stearns recovered from losing the first set to get past Kimberly Birrell 5-7 6-4 6-4 in the first-round. The American had a very strong first serve percentage of 83% though took less than half of her break opportunities on offer. She is now up against 15th seed Amanda Anisimova in the next round.

Anisimova produced some brilliant tennis in her first clay court event of the year at Charleston, winning her first three matches without dropping a set, including against fourth seed Emma Navarro, but she was then forced to withdraw from her semi-final with Sofia Kenin at 5-2 down in the first set.

The American, who won the Qatar Open in February, was suffering from a back injury but has been given the all clear to make a return at this 1000 event. Anisimova has enough variety in her play to defeat Stearns and make it through to the next round.
