Petra Marcinko defeated two-time Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva to advance in Rabat. There is a gap of 21 years between the pair in terms of age, and it was the 20-year-old Marcinko that dominated the encounter, recovering from being broken in the opening game of the match to win 6-2 6-4. She is now one win away from her first quarter-final of the season.
She takes on Yelyzaveta Kotliar in the round-of-16. The 19-year-old came from a set down to beat Francesca Jones in her first-round match. The wildcard looked down and out at 4-0 in the decider, but she won the final six games to claim a dramatic 2-6 6-2 6-3 win. This was the first WTA main draw victory of her career.
Marcinko will be motivated to register her best result of the season with a deep run here, and she’s the overwhelming favourite to reach the last eight.
