Petra Marcinko has not enjoyed the best of seasons up to this point, with 14 defeats from 23 matches in 2026. The Swiss was defeated by Oleksandra Oliynykova in the first-round of the Italian Open last time out. She did reach a semi-final in Oeiras, but her other results have been largely disappointing,
Marcinko faces Vera Zvonareva in the first-round. The 41-year-old, who reached a ranking high of world number two and progressed to a couple of major finals in 2010, qualified for this event after two victories. The Russian is still competitive at her age, having won a WTA 1000 match in Dubai earlier this year, while she also progressed to the quarter-finals of a lower-level event in Monastir.
These two faced each other in the final of a W100 event in Dubai last year, with Marcinko winning 6-3 6-3. Despite her poor form, she is the clear favourite to win over the veteran once more.
