Oleksandra Oliynykova competed in Rouen last week, winning her opening match against Lilli Tagger but then losing in the next stage to Anna Bondar. The Ukrainian also won her singles match against Linda Klimovicova in a Billie Jean King Cup qualifier a week earlier, as Ukraine completed a 4-0 clean sweep over Poland. She reached a ranking high of 66 last month, while her best WTA result of the season was a semi-final appearance at the Transylvania Open.
Simona Waltert is her opponent. She breezed through her qualifying matches against Despina Papamichail and Dominika Salkova, and is set to compete at the event. This followed a decent run at the WTA 125 event in Oerias, as she advanced through to the quarter-finals, losing to Maja Chwalinska.
They have played against each other on two previous occasions, with the head-to-head at 1-1. Waltert is the underdog, but she impressed in qualifying and should be able to make this a competitive match against Oliynykova.
