Oleksandra Oliynykova competed at the Billie Jean King Cup for Ukraine last week, winning her singles match as they comfortably got past Poland. She struggled at her previous event in Charleston, losing to Polina Kudermetova despite taking the first set. She goes up against Lilli Tagger. The teenager enjoyed a fine run at the Linz Open as she reached her first WTA quarter-final on clay. She defeated former world number two Paula Badosa and then pulled off a shock as she beat third seed Liudmila Samsonova. Tagger fought hard as she saved multiple set points in the lengthy second set tiebreak to win in straights.
Tagger’s run ended against Anastasia Potapova, but she has momentum on her side after that run as a wildcard, and will hope to produce another positive showing in Rouen this week.
