Nuno Borges produced one of his best displays of the season as he got past Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets. Etcheverry, who won the Rio Open earlier this year, went into this match as the favourite, but he was never ahead in the match as Borges sealed a 6-3 6-4 6-2 win after two hours and 25 minutes.
He will now take on Miomir Kecmanovic for a place in round three. The Serb also won his first-round match in straight sets as he got past Fabian Marozsan. Kecmanovic was 4-1 down in the first set but he recovered brilliantly as he broke back and won every point in the tiebreak to go in front. He went on to claim a 7-6 (0) 6-3 6-4 victory after two hours and 26 minutes.
That extended his winning run to six matches, as Kecmanovic won a Challenger event in Valencia just over a week ago. He has momentum on his side, but Borges will also be confident after such a brilliant display in his first-round match.
