Northamptonshire Steelbacks were the team to stop the Somerset steam train with a brilliant bowling performance in the first semi-final, defending 143 by restricting the reigning champions to just 126/9. It was an outstanding effort which underlined the all-round quality of this Steelbacks side, superbly captained by David Willey. That’s why they finished top of the Central & West Group with nine wins from 12.
James Vince and Joe Weatherly were key to Hampshire Hawks beating Essex in the quarter-finals and both were crucial again in the semi-finals against Notts Outlaws, scoring 59 and 88 not out respectively to post what was ultimately a winning score of 187/3. With their bowling attack, that was always likely to prove a step too far for the Outlaws.
