Nishesh Basavareddy qualified for the event after two straight set victories. This followed a run to the quarter-finals of a Challenger event in Guangzhou a week earlier. His US Open campaign ended early as he lost in the first-round to Karen Khachanov despite taking the first set. Nevertheless, the 20-year-old has made strides with his first win at a Masters event in Cincinnati and a run to the semi-finals in Auckland at the start of the year.
He faces defending champion Marin Cilic in round one. The Croatian has failed to win a match since getting through to the fourth-round of Wimbledon for the first time in eight years. He decided to rest up before the US Open, but he lost in the first-round to Alexander Bublik and was then on the end of two defeats in the Davis Cup as France lost out to Croatia.
Cilic will be hoping for an upturn in form as he looks to defend his title in Hangzhou. He is experienced enough to deal with the threat of Basavareddy and his big-hitting game will be effective on the fast surface.
