Nikola Bartunkova advanced to her first tour-level quarter-final after beating Darja Vidmanova in straight-forward fashion. The 19-year-old was not broken on serve as she won 6-3 6-2 after just an hour and 29 minutes.
She will now take on Magdalena Frech for a place in the semi-finals. Frech defeated Lucrezia Stefanini in straight sets to get her campaign off and running. The Pole breezed through the first set but was tested on numerous occasions in the second, as she fought from 4-2 down and broke Stefanini when she was serving for the set at 6-5 up. A close tiebreak saw Frech save a set point before sealing a 6-1 7-6 victory.
There are nearly 200 places separating these two in the rankings, and Frech will be expected to come out on top and dominate from the start. She has not enjoyed the best of seasons, but this is a golden opportunity to reach a semi-final for the first time this season.
