Italy impressed hugely in their first game of the tournament and were rewarded with a major scalp, that of USA in a 1-2 victory. Such a win gives Italy the belief that they could do something special at this World Cup, but for now it’s about backing that win up with another big performance against New Zealand.
Bottom of the group after falling to a last-gasp Japanese penalty, such a result will have no doubt stung the New Zealand players. There’s no doubt that they have the ability to compete well here. But that extra nous and high fitness levels of Italy the longer this match goes on should see them grow progressively stronger and ultimately come out on top.
