McCartney Kessler enters the draw as a qualifier, following straight set wins over Renata Zarazua and Oksana Selekhmeteva. Her best clay court result of the season was a quarter-final appearance in Charleston, her second of the season on the WTA Tour and her third overall, having also achieved the feat at a 125 event in Austin.

Her first-round opponent is Jaqueline Cristian. The Romanian lost her opening match against former world number one Karolina Pliskova in Rome. She did win a match in Madrid against Yuliia Starodubtseva, but then lost to the current world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. Along with a quarter-final finish in Adelaide, Cristian progressed to the round-of-16 in Miami earlier in the year. However, she is yet to make a breakthrough on clay in 2026.

Cristian leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a win in Wuhan last year, which went all the way to a deciding set. Another close match could take place in this one.
