McCarthney Kessler made it through qualifying to enter the main draw in Strasbourg. She suffered first round defeats in Rouen and Madrid, while the American could only make the quarter-finals of a 125 event despite being the top seed. She then lost at the earliest possible stage in Rome.
Ashlyn Krueger has hardly fared much better on clay over the past six weeks with three defeats from her five matches and second-round losses in Rouen and Rome along with a defeat in the first-round of Madrid.
Their only encounter took place earlier on in the year in the first-round of the Abu Dhabi Open with Krueger defeating Kessler 6-3 6-7 6-3 but this will be their first match on clay. Neither player is particularly suited to clay but Krueger, who is seven places higher in the rankings, will look to be the aggressor early on and should have enough for victory.
