Matteo Gigante crushed Benjamin Hassan 6-4 6-2 6-0 in the first-round to win his first ever Grand Slam match. That makes it four straight wins for the Italian including qualifying, and he also won on the Challenger Tour in Rome last month.
He will have a much tougher test in the second-round as he faces 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek navigated the threat of Tomas Martin Etcheverry impressively in the first-round, defeating the Argentine 7-5 6-3 6-4. Etcheverry had made the semi-finals of the Hamburg Open just last week and could have been a dangerous first-round opponent, but Tsitsipas was solid from the start and always in control.
We don’t think the former world number three will have many issues here. As long as he maintains the level he produced in the first-round, we expect him to make it through to the third-round with a second successive straight sets victory.
