Matteo Berrettini vs Casper Ruud prediction
Matteo Berrettini made a winning start to his Italian Open campaign with a straight sets win. Berrettini battled past Jacob Fearnley 6-4 7-6 in front of a passionate home crowd. He was forced to dig deep, rallying from 5-3 down in the second and saving two set points when Fearnley attempted to serve it out.
He will now take on Casper Ruud who reached the third-round in his first match since winning the Madrid Open. The Norwegian wasn’t at his best but managed to improve as the match wore on to beat Alexander Bublik 6-4 4-6 6-3. Ruud raised his game in the decider as he didn’t face a break point on serve.
They have played each other on seven occasions, with four of those matches being on clay. Ruud leads 4-3 overall and 3-1 on clay, which includes a last-eight encounter at this event four and a half years ago which Ruud won.
Berrettini will have home support behind them and has the weapons to cause problems for Ruud, but the Norwegian is coming off the back of the most impressive title win of his career so far. We’re favouring Ruud in three sets.
