Martin Damm last competed in Miami, reaching the second-round before losing to world number four Alexander Zverev. That was the fourth defeat in his last five matches, though Damm did impress last month as he got through to the semi-finals of the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, despite having to qualify for the event.

He faces a fellow American in Brandon Nakashima. He is coming off a disappointing loss to Marin Cilic in the second-round of Miami, despite having a match point in the deciding set tiebreak. Nakashima has still picked up results in 2026, reaching his first final since 2022 in Brisbane, while he also got through to the last four in Acapulco, losing another close match to Frances Tiafoe.

Damm’s strong serve will not be as effective here and he won’t be able to win as many free points. Nakashima is a technically sound player and should be able to grind away and force his opponent into errors from either wing.
